Online Counselling

What is Online Therapy?
Online counselling is an increasingly popular option for individuals and couples seeking support and where lifestyle or circumstances make it difficult to attend the more traditional face-to-face sessions. Often referred to as “e-therapy”, online counselling is now considered part of the overall spectrum of ways to access support - although it does not suit everyone. Here are some of the advantages of online therapy:

Advantages of Online Therapy…

  • It allows individuals/couples to attend from the comfort of your own home - making it more accessible and convenient for those with busy lifestyles or mobility constraints.
  • There is more flexibility on appointment times, and sessions can fit around normal working hours.
  • It is more affordable - online therapy does not carry the same costs as meeting in a therapists room or clinic.
  • You can access counselling from anywhere in the world - it doesn’t need to stop if you are working away or move house.
  • It provides a solution to the frequently long waiting lists for face-to-face sessions.
  • It is particularly suited to people with limited mobility or time constraints.
  • If you choose to engage in email therapy, you can keep and reflect on the exchanges with your online therapist.
  • If you choose to engage in video calling therapy, you still have the benefit of being able to see and hear your therapist - something that people often miss with email, messaging or telephone counselling.
  • It can overcome feelings of stigma that you might have around seeking counselling support.
  • Some people find it easier to speak freely and to express themselves more openly than in more traditional face-to-face therapy.

However, online counselling is not suited to everyone and there are limitations. For example, for those who are visually impaired, suffering an enduring mental illness, or are feeling suicidal. Click here for useful resources.

    The Practicalities
    You will need:
  • Access to a computer with good internet connection and a webcam.
  • Secure and uninterrupted space either at home or elsewhere.
  • Payment is required before each session begins (with the exception of the initial consultation which is free).
